Nominate YOUR Favourite Onehunga Heritage Building for Preservation!
With your help, more of Auckland city's built heritage will be identified and preserved in the future. Auckland City is asking members of the public to tell its heritage team about any significant historic buildings they know of that deserve to be protected from alteration, damage or demolition.
The council recently approved $100,000 funding for a heritage architect to carry out an inventory of historical buildings in Auckland city. But the architect can't personally walk along every street in the city to do this, as it would take far too long.
So we need your help to find properties that should be assessed for scheduling in the district plan to protect their natural beauty, architectural, scientific or historical worth. The call for public nominations was approved at Auckland City Council's City Development Committee meeting on 14 July.
The heritage architect - who is yet to be appointed - will also have the job of updating the list of Auckland city's historic buildings using records from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, major Auckland city libraries and other agencies.
Since the mid-1990s, the council has scheduled about 422 historic buildings across the city, many of them in the CBD. However, there is still much work to be done in the suburbs.
If you would like to nominate a historic building for scheduling, write to the council with any relevant information at: City Planning, Auckland City, Private Bag 92 516 Wellesley Street, Auckland 1030.
Before a building can be scheduled, its heritage value must be assessed. If it scores at least 50 points, council officers may recommend that Auckland City seeks to schedule it by starting a public notification process. If there are no appeals, the scheduling would then take effect.
