Onehunga has a rich history of both Maori and European settlement and trade. The name, Onehunga (meaning burial place), refers to Maori burial caves in the area.
Because Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill) was so important to Maori there were some significant battles on its slopes. Onehunga thus gained recognition of this through its name because of the many courageous and noble people who died and were buried there.
Today Onehunga is a friendly, cosmopolitan community with 18,000 residents and almost 1,000 commercial and industrial businesses. The town is dominated from all aspects by Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill). Its commercial heart sweeps down to the beautiful Manukau Harbour.
