February 2010: Presentation to Select Committee on Auckland Governance Bill

"Maungakiekie is critical to the future growth of Auckland in all relevant areas. Failure to address an effective means of governance will negate the potential of Auckland, somethingwhich the reorganization of the Auckland Councils has as its prime goal.

All decisions that will affect the community can and will be made behind doors andannounced afterward the people responsible for these decisions have no responsibility back to the owners – the community.

The reason changes to Auckland City was supported by the Onehunga Business Associationwas the chance to change the focus from bureaucracy back to local governance withresponsibility being given back to local neighbourhoods/communities. Over the last 12months the outlined changes will strip Onehunga of it local representation in the form ofCouncillor local board and this community’s ability to have any say in its present and future.

Everything Onehunga has achieved recently has been due to a lot of advocacy and basically we have had to fight for every little thing. These proposed changes effectively cut us out andI am scared for Onehunga. Areas such as this will disappear slowly but it will happen as bureaucrats allow what may be okay on paper but will destroy the heart of what makes this and other communities. We have already had instances where heritage buildings have beenallowed to be ‘replaced’ rather than repaired or replaced to a certain look.

We were promised stronger local representation and this has been taken away, stronger responsibility and this has been completely removed and I must say I am very concernedabout what is going to happen to the true heart of Auckland which is not the WaitemataHarbour and Queen St. Look at Queen St and see how many people from the Auckland areaare there because of choice not work and then go out into the suburbs. We are the trueAuckland. Auckland is made up of a collective of communities but you are allowing us to beswallowed up. We are the face of Auckland; we supply and support our local economies."
